My Favorite Teacher

Whey Beyond the Naked Truth

Today's Autumn Blog Challenge Question:  Who was your favorite teacher?

I briefly touched on the subject of this teacher in a previous Autumn Blog Challenge post and he is definitely worthy of being my favorite teacher.  His name was Mr. Hertz.  He was my middle school band teacher for 7th and 8th grade.  When I first met him I knew it was going to be a great class.  He was what I would call a combination of hippy and a little crazy (the fun kind!).  But it wasn't just his personality I loved, it was his passion for music.

It would be an average class to have him sing or be-bop around the room while we played our instruments.  We didn't play typical "band" music.  By that I mean orchestra style pieces.  We played some of the best songs by The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, and the list goes on.  It's because of Mr. Hertz and his class that my favorite song of all time to this day is Stairway To Heaven.  One of my favorite memories is our whole band rocking out to playing "Another Brick in the Wall" by Pink Floyd.

Sadly after middle school I quit the whole band thing.   I guess playing flute and the whole stigma that can be attached to band kids was something I didn't want to get into, especially because I was moving and going to be starting a high school where I was nervous about making a good first impression.  I wish I would of stuck with it now though, even if just at home on my own, because I have since forgotten how to read music.  So far my kids haven't shown an interest in band but I would love for one of my girls to try it.  I wish all of my teachers could of been like Mr. Hertz!
