Guest Post: Centerpieces Should Complement the Table

Creating the perfect table setting is all about balance. There's a delicate harmony to well-designed arrangements. When you're careful to keep the centerpieces eye-catching without making them overwhelming, you'll have a table that welcomes, soothes, and is perfectly memorable for any special event.

Shape Up
The first thing to consider when you're choosing your centerpieces is the shape of the table. If you're decorating a long rectangular table, a series of small, low-lying centerpieces along the length of the table is ideal. Centerpieces that don't stand too tall allow conversation to flow. Using several items instead of just one will keep the eye moving down the length of the table so the viewer is able to take it all in.

If you're dressing a round table, a single centerpiece in the middle is a better choice. You can opt for a more elaborate design when you're creating just one item per table. However, you want to make sure that the centerpiece complements the tablecloth and place settings without dominating them.

Colors Are Key
While it can be tempting to go with a design where every item is a perfect match, you'll create a more eye-catching effect when you choose items that contrast well with one another. If you have a dark tablecloth, try a centerpiece with lots of light, such as pale lilac or ice blue and features like candles or reflective marbles. A pastel tablecloth in a color like gentle moss green or powder pink will look stunning with deeper colors in the centerpiece. Burgundy, magenta, forest, and chocolate brown will pop against a light-colored backdrop.

A Bouquet of Choices
Flowers are the traditional choice for formal centerpieces, but you have only a small window of time when they look fresh. Candles, peacock or ostrich feathers, and shimmering crystal centerpieces are a lasting alternative that you can use for more than one occasion.

These items are extremely versatile so you can dress them up or down easily. In a fine vase, your ostrich feathers are elegant and refined. In casual, brightly colored holders, they're perfect for a shower or other semi-formal event. One great resource is www.eventswholesale.com with a wide variety of choices in this area.
As you're designing your tables, always remember to step back often and take in the whole arrangement. Centerpieces are never meant to stand alone. When the table is complemented by the piece but not hidden, you'll know you have the perfect design.

Help Finding Low Income Housing

If you are one of the many Americans dealing with financial hardships, you may be looking into finding low income housing options.  Low income housing is affordable housing for low income families.  This kind of housing can be available through many different sources including city, county, state, non-profit, real estate, and government based programs.

Low income housing eligibility is determined by your income for the year.  This number can fluctuate depending on where you live, the amount of expenses you have, and the amount of dependents of your family.  Check out websites where you can search by state for low income housing program options in your area to see if you qualify and how to apply.

One option you can explore is Section 8 housing.  With Section 8 you are placed on a list based on your household need.  When an affordable housing option for your family becomes available, you are required to pay only 30% of your monthly income as rent.  You can visit your local HUD (Department of Housing and Urban Development) for more information on how to apply.

Wigglebottom coloring pages, posters, lessons, songs, games, and free animated versions of the books!  You can also purchase the Howard B. Social Media And Kids

Technology keeps us connected more now than ever before, and our kids have become a part of this.  Cell phones and computers are a big part of how our kids stay connected.  If you're like me, I not only try to limit time with electronics when it comes to my kids, I also try to keep an eye on it.  I also use social media and technology to have talks with my children regarding possible dangers behind them.

One way to monitor and use these tools to keep the lines of communication open is to talk with your kids about their texting and online habits.  Get involved and ask them who they are talking to.  If they are playing an online game (as my girls do), ask them if they can show you how the game or website works. Remind your kids to be careful what they say or send via text or online.  Take this time to discuss cyber bullying, sexting, and the danger of online predators.

One thing I've learned is just because a website appears kid friendly, it's really not that appropriate.  A lot of these "kid" gaming websites I have found include a chat function.  Problem is, I find a lot of them are not filtered.  In my home a gaming website has to be approved through me first.  This way I can check it out before letting them loose with it.  One kids website for games that I love because parents have to approve accounts by email and they have a safe chat function parents can set is Club Penguin.  Another good website is Disney Channel Games.  We also have a separate login for the kids on the computer where the Internet has been modified to filter what websites they can view, as well as filter search results.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has a great article regarding social media and kids.  They offer some great tips to help monitor and keep communication open regarding technology with your kids.  You can check it out here.

The Price of Convenience

Whey Beyond the Naked Truth

Yesterday's Autumn Blog Challenge Question:  Do you think we've made our lives more complicated by trying to make things more convenient?

I do think we have complicated things some with the modern conveniences we now have.  In particular, with technology.  Some things I can think of is that while it's nice to shoot a friend or family member a quick email to see how their day is going, the sentiment of writing a personalized letter seems to be somewhat of a lost art.  Along the same lines, texting has become just as common as a phone call, and to me isn't as personalized.  We used not to have to worry about people getting into accidents from talking on their cell phone or texting while driving.  These are some complications that cause concern.

To be fair though, technology advancements have their upside.  Since computers and the dawn of the Internet I have my blog which I love to write through and have met so many wonderful people as a result of it.  If I do have an emergency on the road or away from home I know my cell phone is right there when I need it.  So yes, we have made our lives somewhat complicated by making it more convenient, but it also has made things better in ways.

MiracleGro Logo(1).jpg

Did you know that Fall can actually be a great time to plant some edible goodies for your kitchen?  Based on your region, Miracle-Gro can show you the perfect edibles, flowers, shrubs, and more for  Fall gardening.  Being that I'm on the West Coast, the Miracle-Gro website showed me a great way to create an edible landscape by planting beautifully colored leafy lettuces like red salad bowl, lolla rossa and emerald gem.  The colors will pop in your yard and you will be able to include them in your tasty meals as well!

Fall Allergy Tips

Fall is just around the corner!  The changing colors of the leaves and the cool crisp air are about to roll in.  If you suffer from fall allergies you may also have noted this on your list of upcoming changes with the season.  The good thing is that you can manage your fall allergies efficiently with these handy tips!

1)  Make sure to keep wet piles of leaves clear around your home, as this is the perfect breeding ground for leaf mold which can be a big trigger for those with fall allergies.

2)  Other areas that are breeding grounds for mold in the fall are garages, basements, and barns.  During the fall you may opt to avoid these areas as much as possible to prevent annoying allergies.

3)  Whenever possible, avoid early morning pollen in the fall.  This is the time of the day when the pollen count will be at it's peak.

4)  Don't forget about indoor allergies!  This would be a good time to clean/change the filters in your home that have gathered up pollen, mold, and ragweed traces from outside.

5)  Store your firewood outdoors.  Firewood can harbor molds that will trigger allergy sufferers.

6)  If you have indoor/outdoor pets, make sure you are bathing them on a regular basis to remove any allergens that they may bring in the house inside their fur.

Chocolate Applescotch Cake Recipe

This recipe is one I concocted today as a result of wanting a tasty treat!  I wanted to use up the rest of the Granny Smith apples I had, so I took inventory of what I could throw together.  This cake turned out to be a huge success at my house and I'm glad I wrote it down as I went along because I will be making this again for sure!  There is no frosting in the directions because this cake is so moist and flavorful, you really don't need one.  The chunks of diced apples inside give you a sweet and slightly tart surprise that go well with the chocolate.  I served this up while it was still warm and it was perfect.

Chocolate Applescotch Cake

Ingredients:
1 box of chocolate cake mix
1 1/3 cups of water
1/2 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
3 Granny Smith apples
(1) 3.5 oz. box of Jello Butterscotch Pudding Mix

Directions:
(Preheat oven to 350 degrees)
1)  Peel and dice up your Granny Smith apples.
2)  In a bowl combine your apples, cake mix, water, oil, eggs, and pudding mix.  Stir well.
3)  Grease a 13 x 9 pan and pour in your cake mix.
4)  Bake at 350 degrees for 32-37 minutes.

Sloppy Joe Pie Recipe

Ingredients:
1 1/2 lbs. ground beef
(1) 15.5 oz. can of Hunt's Manwich Thick & Chunky Sloppy Joe Sauce
2 cups of Colby-Jack shredded cheese
1 box of Pillsbury Pie Crusts

Directions:
( Preheat oven to 375 degrees)
1)  Brown hamburger meat and drain.  Add can of Manwich and mix well.
2)  Put the first pie crust dough into the bottom of your pie dish.
3)  Spoon your hamburger mix into the bottom pie crust.
4)  Sprinkle 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheese on top of the hamburger mix.
5)  Add your second pie crust dough over the top and crimp edges to seal.  Cut a few small slits on top to vent.
6)  Sprinkle your remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheese on top of pie.
7)  Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes.

My "Go To" Cooking Recipe

Whey Beyond the Naked Truth

I love slow cooking in my Crock Pot, especially during the fall/winter months.  Years and years ago when I got my first Crock Pot I quickly started trying to find good recipes to experiment with.  That's when I came upon the famous recipe amongst crock pot folk, the 3 Envelope Pot Roast recipe.  Even though I'm a vegetarian, when I first started making this I wasn't, so I can attest it is in fact good!  My husband and kids love it.  It's really a one pot meal that includes the meat, potatoes, and carrots.  I usually make biscuits to go with it as well.  In fact, it's funny because I just went grocery shopping and am planning on making this recipe tomorrow!

3 Envelope Pot Roast Recipe:

Ingredients:

1 Beef Roast  ( I personally like using a Beef Round Sirloin Tip 2 1/2 pounder)
Carrots
Potatoes
1 Envelope of Italian Dressing Mix
1 Envelope of Ranch Dressing Mix
1 Envelope of Brown Gravy Mix
1 cup water

Directions:

1)  Place your beef roast in your slow cooker and pour in your cup of water.
2)  Sprinkle half of each of your envelope mixes over your roast.
3)  Layer your potatoes and carrots ( I like to keep my whole, but you can cut up if desired) on top of your roast.
4)  Sprinkle the rest of each of your envelope mixes over your potatoes and carrots.
5)  Cook on low for 7-8 hours in your slow cooker

My version may be a little different than some others floating around the internet.  The way I do it is what turned out best through trial and error of making this recipe.

Packaways Storage Boxes Review

Packaways make it easy to stay organized with their reusable plastic storage boxes.  They come in three handy sizes:  Classic, Tote, or Under Bed.  Packaways are an instant set up, with no tape required!  You can literally reuse these storage boxes over and over again.  The easy wipe away end panels make it great for marking your storage contents, and then easily wiping to change the label when needed.  I love that!

Packaways are made from corrugated plastic and are resistant against water and humidity.  When not in use, Packaways fold flat to easily store away.  These storage boxes are also proudly made in the USA.  Whether you're looking to help your child organize their room, organize your own space, or need some durable options for moving - Packaways has got you covered!

I received two of the Classic style Packaways storage boxes in Green and Pink.  Right away I knew that I wanted to use them for memory boxes to keep the girls' school papers, yearbooks, drawings, etc. in.  Right now my method was using a big box up in my closet, but it has since become overflowing and I have resorted to stacking on top of the box.  The Green box is plenty big enough to store what I have now, and the Pink one I know will get used in the coming years as well.

What I like is how these storage boxes easily assemble.  You simply push down the bottom of the box and it locks itself into place!  I think the wipe off labels are genius and it looks so much nicer than scribbling on the sides of a box.  I would definitely recommend Packaways to keep organized.  The colors are fun too, so you can't go wrong there!  I think I will need to get a couple more of these for other household organizational products in the future.

Connect With Packaways:

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
