How to Manage Your Child's Bed Wetting Stage

Photo Credit: Kris Kesiak Photography via Compfight cc

Bed wetting is a common problem amongst younger children, but it can be a difficult phase for both parents and children. With the right steps, however, this phase can be easily managed in a way that causes as small of an impact to kids and parents as possible.

Be Prepared

When your child has a wet night it’s ideal to be able to manage the accident with as little fuss as possible so that your child can return to bed as quickly as he/she can and with the least disruption to sleep and state of mind. If you’re prepared with a fresh set of sheets and fresh pajamas you can swiftly have the bed and your child dry and ready again for sleep.

The Right Equipment

There are a few items which will make dealing with wet nights much easier. Firstly, try having a night light in your child’s room and/or in the bathroom so that it’s easy and safe for your child to find the way to the toilet at night. Some kids’ bunk beds may be a deterrent to getting out of bed in the night, so if your child sleeps in the top bunk make sure the design of the bed facilitates night-time toilet trips as best as possible. You can also try absorbent pants for night time. These are especially beneficial if your child isn’t sleeping at home. You might also want to invest in a waterproof under-sheet to protect the mattress, making it much easier to clean up and return your child to bed as quickly as possible.

Pre-sleep Routine

Try limiting your child’s intake of fluid before bed time. You should try to develop a habit of not drinking too much fluid just before bed, but never refuse water if your child is thirsty, of course. If your child wants milk, juice or cordial before bed, refuse and offer only water – sometimes he/she may simply be craving a sweet drink rather than actually being thirsty, and you want to limit fluid intake before bed to only what is needed, rather than what is desired. Take your child to the toilet just before it’s time for lights out, to empty the bladder before bed.

Emotional Support

Wetting the bed can cause some emotional turmoil for children and affect their self esteem, especially as they get older. It’s important to talk to your child about bed wetting and make sure that you explain that it’s normal, that you understand, and that you know it’s not his/her fault. When an accident does happen, don’t make a big fuss and certainly don’t punish your child, he/she should never be scalded for bed wetting as it is out of his/her control. You can also offer praise for dry nights, which helps boost self esteem.

If Problems Persist

In most cases, time is the best cure for bed wetting and most kids grow out of this stage by the time they’re 5 years old. If your child is over five and continues to wet the bed in spite of taking the above steps, you may wish to consult your pediatrician. A pediatrician may suggest the use of a bed wetting alarm system or might run tests to determine if there is a physiological issue or an infection. He/she may also suggest counseling to deal with the emotional ramifications of bed wetting if the problem persists to a point that affects your child’s emotional wellbeing. By taking these steps, the bed wetting phase should become much easier to deal with. Just remember that it’s something your child will grow out of eventually, but in the mean time all you need to do is offer your love and support until dry nights come easy.

Amanda is a full time mother from Sydney, Australia. She recently was confronted with the common problem of her youngest son wetting the bed and did some research into the subject. She felt compelled to share her advice with other mothers out there and compiled this list.

Carmex Everyday Healing Cream and Hydrating Lotion Review and Giveaway

If you're like me, then you trust Carmex for all your go-to lip care needs.  But did you know that Carmex also makes some fantastic skin care products now as well?  That's right!  Carmex makes skin care products that if you haven't yet heard about or had the chance to experience yet, you simply must check them out.  Introducing Carmex Everyday Healing Cream and Carmex Everyday Hydrating Lotion.  Keeping your skin nourished is a top priority and especially at this time when we are transitioning from dry winter weather into a mixture of the sun and rain that comes with Spring, these products can help heal, repair, and protect with whatever weather comes your way!

Carmex Everyday Healing Cream and Hydrating Lotion products contain increased levels of lanolin to help maximize healing.  Their formulas also contain petrolatum and allantoin to help soften rough skin and lock in moisture.  Loaded with Vitamin E and Aloe Vera, these products pack a moisturizing punch that sooth and hydrate without leaving any greasy mess or feel.  Click here to find out where you can purchase Carmex Everyday skin care products in your local area.

Thanks to the great folks at Carmex I was able to review both their Everyday Hydrating Lotion and their Everyday Healing Cream.  The Everyday Hydrating Lotion and Everyday Healing Cream are great because not only are they non-greasy, they are also fast absorbing!  My favorite feature of both of these products though is their scent!  I would have to describe it as a very light scent, but one that reminds me also of a clean fresh powder smell.  Very nice!  I have dry skin, especially on my legs, and both the lotion and the cream definitely do the trick with keeping my skin hydrated.  The cream is a little on the thicker side, which I think would make this product nice for winter weather to prevent chapped or dry skin.  This could also work better for those who have skin that is rougher or might not respond as well to traditional lotions/creams.  It's thick healing formula coats nicely and penetrates well to lock moisture in.  I would recommend these products to my readers as someone who has tried them and loved the results from them so far!

{Guest Post} 5 Ways to Prevent Getting Sick While on Vacation

There are few moments that are more exciting than getting ready to go on vacation. You make sure to pack the essentials such as suntan lotion, your bathing suit and sunglasses. You bring your camera so you can post pictures of your vacation for all of your friends to see. But if you are not careful, then those pictures could be of you spending the entire vacation sick in your hotel room. There are some tips you can follow that will help you avoid getting sick before and during your holiday.

See The Doctor Before You Leave

Image via Flickr by Official U.S. Navy Imagery

Schedule an appointment with your doctor at least a week before you leave for your vacation. Your doctor will be able to see the signs of a pending condition that could bring your entire vacation down. You should also let your doctor know where you will be going so that he can give you any shots you will need and make suggestions on how to stay healthy. If you are running low on prescriptions, then let your doctor know that you need to buy Zyprexa, along with your other prescription medication, before you leave.

Dress For The Weather

Las Vegas can be a desert paradise that reaches temperatures in excess of 100 degrees during the day. But when the sun goes down, the temperatures in Vegas can plummet to below 50 degrees. Always so research on where you will be going and bring clothes that will be appropriate for the weather. You should plan for extremes so that you are not taken by surprise. For example, if there is any chance that it will snow in Miami while you are there, then bring at least one set of clothes you could wear to stay warm and avoid disease.

Get Rest And Drink Fluids

Image via Flickr by Amarand Agasi

When you are at home, you always make sure to drink your daily allowance of water and get plenty of rest to maintain your good health. Those are two good habits you should take with you when you head out for vacation. You want to have a good time, but you do not want to weaken your body and expose it to disease at the same time.

Be Sure To Eat Regular Meals

Image via Flickr by Laurel_Kate

Some people will skip meals to have extra money for fun activities while on vacation. If you deny your body the nutrients it needs on a daily basis, then you will wind up spending the vacation in bed instead of doing anything fun.

Wash Your Hands Regularly

Image via Flickr by SCA Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget

When you visit a popular vacation spot, you are sharing the space with thousands of people from all over the world. The smartest thing to do is wash your hands at least three times a day to eliminate any of the bacteria you may have picked up opening doors or touching windows.
The key to enjoying a vacation is remaining healthy enough to do the things that you want to do. You are supposed to leave the world behind on vacation, but that does not mean that you should forget to take care of yourself. Practice good health habits on vacation and avoid spending the entire trip confined to your hotel room.

The Benefits of Getting Your Master’s Degree Online

Online education is extremely popular today because people are simply too busy to go to a physical school to earn a higher level of education, whether it is a certification in a specific field or a college degree. Online education allows you to interact with your professor and classmates and complete an entire course of study all within the comfort of your own home, sometimes even on your own schedule. It allows working professionals who want to go back to school for their master’s degree to continue working their full-time jobs and keep earning the money they need to pay the bills and support their families. Once the degree program is completed, that individual is ready to negotiate a raise, a better position, or look for another form of employment altogether.

If you are thinking about earning your master’s degree on the Internet, it is best to really weigh out the pros and cons and determine if this is the best decision for you. Below are just a few of the benefits of earning your master’s degree online.

Pros of Getting Your Master’s Degree on the Internet

  • Online masters programs offer all of the same content and knowledge that you will need to advance your career in a particular field of study. In other words, the material that would be taught to you in person in a physical college or university would still be provided to you for your studies in an online program. Therefore, you do not need to worry about students attending brick and mortar schools being any better prepared than you will be for your career. Instead, you are all receiving the same level of education and you are all prepared for the same kind of work in the end.
  • Online programs also require that students pass the same exams, complete the same assignments, and prove that they are utilizing the knowledge they are being taught. Even though homework and tests are submitted via an online portal, you are still required to pass all of these assignments with good grades in order to prove that you are learning everything well. So, again, there is no need to fear that anyone who attends a brick and mortar school will be treated more strictly, as you all need the same grade point average to pass the courses and complete the program.
  • Because you do not waste time driving to and from class, getting stuck in traffic, you do not risk being late for class. And because you are working out of the comfort of your own home, you can do your work at any time of the day or night.
  • All of your professors are available at specific hours, just like they would be if you attended a physical school. But, while going to school online, you can always ask questions at any time and professors will respond whenever possible. Therefore, you don’t have to schedule special meeting times with your professors.

About the author:  Jessica thinks being able to earn your education online is a great thing. You can choose almost any type of degree and program that you’d like to learn on the Internet. For example, those interested in earning a degree is tax law can easily find online LLM in Tax programs.

Ways You Can Get Involved With World Water Day 2013

March 22, 2013 is World Water Day.  It's a day to examine water issues worldwide and to see what can be done to bring about change.  This day was established by the United Nations and it helps to bring awareness to the fact that so many people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation.  In fact, roughly 783 million people are affected worldwide.  This creates not only many hardships as you can imagine for those affected, but also brings disease and death.  2,000 children die every day as a result of this lack of access to clean drinking water and proper sanitation.  On World Water Day March 22, 2013, we can come together to start working on solutions for change to turn these statistics around.

5 Best Places Offline To Find College Scholarships

When you start exploring what kinds of college scholarships are out there available for you it's best to not just limit yourself to what you can find by searching online.  Don't get me wrong!  You will find a large wealth of scholarships online and you definitely should take advantage of these scholarships and apply for the ones you do come across that you qualify for.  The problem is that there are also scholarships out there that are not listed online that can be found in your own backyard if you just do a little creative digging.  As I continue my own college education and apply every year for new scholarships, I come across new places to look and new resources each time.  Here are my top five best places I like to look offline to find scholarships!

1)  Your College Financial Aid Office -

If you don't go anywhere else other than here, this is one place you should always stop for scholarship information!  For those still in high school you should be visiting your high school counselor for opportunities available to you.  You will usually need to make an appointment with someone in the financial aid office so come to your appointment prepared with information that can help them determine which scholarships you might qualify for such as financial background, special interests, volunteer and or club/activity history, career interest, etc.  It might also be a good idea to bring a copy of your current FAFSA so they can pull qualifying information from that if necessary.  Your college financial aid office will have a wealth of information when it comes to state and local scholarships that you may not find online.

2)  Your Employer -

Many companies offer educational scholarships to their employers.  It definitely is worth looking into to see if your employer offers these kinds of scholarships to it's employers.  Don't forget to also have your parents check what scholarships their employers might offer.  Some offer educational scholarships to children of their employees.  If you or your parents are union members there could be scholarships offered to look into as well!

3)  Hit the Books -

One thing I did different this year was I ordered scholarship resource books in addition to my online search of scholarships.  I actually found a great deal of scholarships in these books that were not listed online!  I recommend investing in a recent year's copy of a scholarship book list or vising your library to see what hidden scholarship gems you can find!

4)  Look Locally -

Looking in your own community can be a great way to find some local scholarships, meaning less competition and a better chance you just might cash in on some fantastic scholarships for school!  If you or your parents are members of a local area church or religious organization you can start there to see if any scholarship opportunities might be available.  Also, check with your local Chamber of Commerce, community associations and clubs you or your parents might belong to, and even inquire within your local government for opportunities.  Just remember it never hurts to call and ask!

5)  Your Friends -

Yes, really!  If you have some friends that are actively looking for scholarships look at this as a way to work together and enhance your chances, not as competition!  Plan to meet together once a week or twice a month and have each person bring some new local opportunities they came across to share with everyone.  You never know what you just might find!

Do you have some great ideas on how to find scholarships offline?  Comment and share!

Forget Self Editing - Here's Why Proofreading Services Are Here to Stay

You need proofreading services more than you think. You are not immune from making errors -even the simplest kind -when composing any piece of writing. Whether it's a piece you've written professionally or an assignment for college, you are bound to make mistakes every time you write something. So why not allow proofreading services to ease the burden of catching your own mistakes? It's certainly more sensible to rely on these services than to develop a reputation for poor compositions. Below are some reasons why proofreading services are here to stay.

They Check for Misuse of Words

Too many people wrongly believe that just relying on a spellchecker or grammar checker is enough to make sure their compositions are readable. This is far from true, as both checkers miss situations when words are used incorrectly in certain contexts. Proofreading services will be able to analyze the construction of a sentence to ensure that no words are misused in your composition. As a result, you'll only present writing that has a nice flow and is easy to read.

They Make Sure Your Presentation is Professional

If you have a business, then your presentations have to be totally free of errors. Whether you're writing reports for your partners or market analyses for your clients, you have to display professionalism in what you do. If you display a presentation that is chock-full of grammatical and spelling mistakes, your credibility takes an irreversible hit. With proofreading services, you'll only submit the most professional presentations, thereby keeping your reputation and the reputation of your business in sound standing.

They Help You Overcome Language Barriers

Writing properly in English is already a challenge for many who are native English speakers. This problem is worsened for people who speak English as a second language. For those people, proofreading services are a godsend as trying to catch grammar or spelling mistakes in important compositions can be difficult. If English isn't your first language but you've got important reports or documents to submit, you need proofreading services.

They Help You Get Higher Grades

Many students, as well as academics, depend on proofreading services to get good grades or to retain their intellectual reputation. A lot of essays are much too long for students to proof them, and academics want to maintain a very high degree of credibility when authoring their various papers. Proofreading services are vital to both students and academics because they improve the quality of their papers, which is extremely important to their careers.

Proofreading services are here to stay, and some argue that demand for their services will only continue to grow. When you author something, you can't be expected to catch all of your own errors, and you will make errors. Proofreading services can efficiently catch these errors, thereby helping you with clients, bosses, and teachers. Too many times, you may use words improperly without even knowing it. Similarly, you might submit a sloppy presentation that is full of errors even though you believe you double-checked your report sufficiently. Proofreading services make these problems a thing of the past.

5 Fast Ways to Evaluate Applicants Online Accurately

Paper applications are a thing of the past, as more companies have taken the process online. But there are certain things you can see on a paper application, like how neatly a person writes, that a screen won’t tell you. Learn 5 fast ways to evaluate online applicants and make a good decision.

Fast Evaluation is Key

Image via Flickr by groundswell

You don’t have time to call every reference or research every entry. Available jobs get swamped quickly with applicants, all of whom show themselves in the best possible light. It’s your job to weed out those who are poor candidates.

The problem: just about everybody lies and embellishes on the job applications. Some are so good at it, they could practically get a real degree in fabrication. Look for certain key points to make quicker evaluations and find the right potential candidates.

Look for Early Work Habits to Weed Out Laziness

Image via Flickr by woodleywonderworks

Studies show that employees who held jobs when they were in high school excelled in overall job performance. Look at past work history to spot candidates who worked while they were students. It is much more likely that these applicants will be the conscientious workers you seek.

Be Suspicious of Connections to Family Businesses

Image via Flickr by star5112

Be particularly wary of applicants who worked in their own family’s business in the past. It is possible they are coming to you from a very lax working environment. If the rest of the application looks promising, don’t turn applicants away. But you should ask them why they are not working in the family business, as this is significant.

Add Up the Months

Image via Flickr by photosteve101

Look at the work history of each job applicant, and count the months. Employees who worked for a short time at various places have a very shoddy work history; why should they work more than a few months for you? Look for candidates who worked for employers for long stretches at a time. You want years, not months.

Grammar Says it All

Image via Flickr by billsaturno

How’s the spelling? Look for errors when it comes to grammar, capitalization and punctuation. Poor spelling and word usage show sloppiness. This person might have made mistakes because they were rushing to get it done. That’s not how you want them to treat their work.

37% of Hiring Managers Go Online to Check Applicants

Image via Flickr by codemastersnake

More hiring managers are looking beyond the traditional application to other factors, like social media. CareerBuilder conducted a survey that found 37 percent of hiring managers looking up their job applicants online. Of this group, more than half turn to Facebook as a primary resource. It’s starting to become a bit of a hot-button issue, as many social media users have protested this hiring practice. However, social media can tell you a lot about who you’re hiring.

Evaluate potential employees quickly and efficiently by looking at certain key factors, and find the right person for the job.

Practical Skills Improved with New Diplomas

New Diplomas: Pupils More Chance to Improve their Practical Skills

With the new curriculum - courtesy of education secretary, Michael Gove – we’re also starting to see the rise of diplomas; vocational qualifications that are hoping to challenge GCSEs and A-levels as reliable awards.

Why The New Diplomas?

The government’s aim is to move away from the textbooks to the more transferable skills that can prepare pupils for the working world. Although traditional subjects are still concrete, teachers are now encouraged to use up a lot of the school week by developing ‘personal learning and thinking skills,’ such as self-management and independent inquiry – everything the coalition would like to see from business-savvy children.

Do Diplomas Offer Up Opportunities for School Excursions?

In theory, this move towards practical learning could herald the beginning of outdoor trips for students. Teachers should have the time and support to be more adventurous with schooling. This includes expanding language learning to Mandarin and Urdu (the languages of countries set to be economic superpowers in the future). Other classes have been proposed, such as financial literacy and cooking.

It’s thought that financial students could be put to the test by helping to organize the school trips, using their business skills.

Teachers agree that there are more open opportunities to utilize outdoor learning, but the pressure of academic results will pose too great a threat to school trips. With a strict curriculum to meet, students can’t be allowed to miss a single day inside the classroom, for fear that the school’s league table position will drop. The emphasis is entirely on exams, not learning.

Many of these diplomas incorporate school trips in their curriculum; the first five diplomas to hit the scene were engineering, construction, information technology, creative and media studies, and society, health and development.

Collaborating with local businesses will help children gain the skills they need to achieve employment after their studies. To achieve the diploma, you must have gained two weeks of work experience. Working in companies, students will develop social skills, presentation, and team work.

Students may even be encouraged to find their own work experience, linked to a career they want to pursue in the future.

The Fear Of Litigation

Although the diploma ostensibly opens up further opportunities for outdoor education, that doesn’t mean the same old barriers stand in a teacher’s way. Not only are school trips time-consuming, but they’re a red tape nightmare, and many teachers are going above and beyond the call of duty, just to provide a rounded education for their students.

Also, in a claims-happy world, some parents are ready to sue teachers if their kids so much as scrape their knee on a school trip. Whenever a teacher starts organizing outdoor education, no matter how many long hours he or she plans, there’s no way of guaranteeing that an accident won’t happen. Although these instances are few and far between, an increase in school trips invariably means increased vulnerability for teachers.

This post has been composed for Knowsley Safari Park, a memorable and educational choice for UK school trips.
