Creative Ways to Add Light to Your Bathroom

Creative ways to add light to your bathroom

Those of us blessed to have a bathroom with a window to the outside don't fully appreciate what benefits it brings; it adds light to the room, ventilation, and the window is a design feature in itself, breaking up the room and completing it.

If you have a very small window in your bathroom, or no window at all, chances are it's pretty glum (not to mention steamy). Electricity is expensive and having the main light bulb on 24/7 isn't an option. So what can you do?

Well, there are creative ways to add light to your bathroom, some of which don't cost the Earth. Let's take a look at these today and see what's what.

Illuminated bathroom mirrors

Almost every single bathroom I've ever been in has had a mirror of some sort. The most common place to have a mirror is above the bathroom sink, and the beauty of the mirror is that it reflects any light around the room. You can add light to your bathroom by having an illuminated bathroom mirror.

Now, by illuminate, I don't mean it glows; illuminated bathroom mirrors feature a light at the top with a simple switch. When pulled it works in the same was as a regular light, however, they use a lower voltage benefiting from the mirrors reflective abilities. This will help you save energy and at night time, the lower voltage will be more relaxing too.

Bathroom cabinets with lights

Whether you have a window or not in your bathroom, bathroom cabinets with lights are a must. They ensure that you can see what you are doing and that your pick out the toothpaste instead of the deodorant. Simple bathroom cabinets can be retro-fitted with a light inside or bathroom cabinets can be bought with a light out of the box.

The best bathroom cabinet lights are the ones which automatically come on when the cabinet door is opened. Cheaper options tend to have a pull switch, which isn't ideal for a bathroom with little to no light.

Creative fixtures

A fixture can in itself completely change how the light in a room is perceived. Fixtures on walls are ideal for a small bathroom space, and just like a lampshade spreads light around a room, fixtures are designed to do the same.

There are some wonderful fixtures to be had for your bathroom; any good DIY and home improvement store will sell them, or if you prefer, you can buy hand-made fixtures for that extra exclusivity.

Light tubes

This creative way to get more natural light in to a room has been made famous with thanks to Channel 4's Grand Designs. Light tubes can be up to 6 meters long. The inside of a light tube is made from mirror, and they are placed just above ground covered by a plastic top to protect from the elements. Whenever it is daylight natural light will be reflected in to your home.

This is ideal for a bathroom as it costs nothing, sans the initial installation cost. You will not only save money on your energy bills but it will be quite the talking point too.

Planning A Home Makeover? Utilize This Guide!

Now, home improvement is a very popular hobby which is growing in popularity. The demand for goods and methods related to it are on the increase. Now may be the time to begin with it. Here are a few hints that one can utilize to get you began along with your home improvement plans.

Removing outdated wallpaper is just a home improvement that may utterly transform the inside of your property. When you have cash to spend, the ideal method to eliminate wallpaper is always to purchase a commercial stream wallpaper stripper. If, nevertheless, you're on a small budget, fill a spray bottle with a combination of warm water and fabric softener and fully saturate the wallpaper. Leave the background for a very few minutes then carefully peel off with a putty knife.

In the event your budget will allow it, select for real wood floors as opposed to laminate. Even though they'll get the look of genuine wood, and might in fact be simpler to look after and clean, they're unable to be refinished. What this means is they will need to be totally redone if a fresh appearance is desired.

Be certain to really have a contractor or electrician put in a power outlet within the cupboard above where in fact the microwave will go. Should you not do that, you'll be fighting to track down a spot to plug it in all through or following the setup of the microwave and hood vent.

Choosing to utilize wooden flooring in place of carpeting will save you lots of trouble in the long term. Carpeting can contain allergens and cleaning it really is sometimes out of the inquiry. The price of ripping up and replacing your rug can nearly be just as expensive as merely putting down wooden flooring. Wooden floors may be re-finished and re-painted as needed; also supplying an even more rural and bungalow style environment.

Vermont Home Builder Services
Be sure you get your own contractor to sign documents until they start any undertaking. In case you are undertaking a costly home improvement job, it may be worth it to pay about $150 to have an attorney review your home improvement contract before signing it. Begin and end dates, work to get done and guarantee information has to be said within the contract.

As it pertains to do it yourself, go together with your gut feeling in regards to the contractor for as long as the rest matches up. Don't you dare consider someone which you may not entirely trust, as you likely have that feeling for a reason. For those who have a trace of mistrust toward the contractor that you simply meet with, it might simply result in rage and mistrust on an exponential amount if things don't go in accordance with plan.

Once you hire a contractor to work with a do it yourself job, be certain he is holding a current permit and he has insurance for his workers. This is essential for your own protection, in case there is a legal dispute about the grade of the work. In addition, if his workers aren't included in his insurance, you may be fiscally accountable for any injuries an employee incurs, while he's on your premises.

You must now see the reason why this hobby is really popular. There was so much you certainly can do in it! There's also a lot of info about how to begin enjoying the advantages of it. By abiding by these suggestions, you're well on the way to successfully enhancing your house.

In Vermont, Housewright Construction uses a team approach for success as a home builder. Established in 1985, we have employed a number of people and companies as excellent resources to build custom houses all over Vermont.

5 Unexpected Ways To Show Your Mom You Love Her

Being a mother is practically the hardest job out there, and it doesn’t pay well!  A mother works around the clock and receives little in terms of monetary compensation.  However, she does receive a lot of love in return.  Sometimes, it can be nice to show your mom how much you love her with a nice gift.  The following are popular gifts for mom that you might consider giving her at anytime of the year.

Jewelry

First, everyone knows that jewelry is a woman’s best friend. Therefore, you cannot go wrong giving your mom a nice piece of jewelry from your local jewelry store.  Depending on your budget, you can invest in some diamonds, or you can invest in something less expensive like costume jewelry.  Keep in mind if you have the money for something nice like a diamond necklace it will last longer.  It will also serve as a nice heirloom that she can pass down to future generations.  Therefore, it might be worth the investment.

Flowers

Another thoughtful present to give your mom is flowers.  This is a great way to show her that you are thinking of her.  Too often, people assume that they have to spend a fortune to give flowers.  However, there are often beautiful bouquets available at the grocery store or local farmers market.  These are inexpensive options that will brighten her day and show her how much you care.  You can invest in more extravagant bouquets on special occasions like her birthday or mother’s day.

Spa Day

Sometimes your mom might be in need of a time out.  Since mothers are naturally selfless, they rarely take this needed time for themselves.  However, you can give them this by paying for a day at the spa.  They can visit the spa and get pampered.  It is a great way for them to rest, distress and feel rejuvenated.  There are many great services that these spas offer, including massages, waxes, facials, and more.  You might even be able to get a package deal so that she can enjoy participating in a few while she is there.

Gift Card

If your mom is an avid shopper, consider giving her a gift card to her favorite store.  For many women, there is no better therapy than a day at the mall.  It will be fun for her to spend the day shopping for herself instead of for her children.  Most moms put the majority of their extra income towards their kids and simply go without.  A gift card to her favorite store will force her to spend money on herself for a change!

Handmade Gifts

Finally, little kids who do not have the money to purchase gifts for their moms can always make something handmade.  For example, kids can draw a card or picture.  They could also create a watercolor painting.  Although these handmade gifts sound simple, they will be kept for years.  In fact, sometimes moms will even have the framed and hung on the wall.

When it comes to showing your mom how much you care, saying “I love you” is important, but it is also nice to give her a gift once in awhile.  Therefore, try giving her one of these popular gifts.

Celebrating Your Birthday? 5 Party Planning Ideas

Party planning is a necessity when you are coming up with a birthday. Everyone celebrates birthdays a little bit differently, but in the United States, it’s typically done with a party – and maybe even some balloons and streamers to turn the atmosphere into a celebratory place. When it comes to party planning, there are 5 ideas that you will want to try and implement into your event.

Hire a Bounce House

Often times a jumper rental or bounce house is a great way to keep the kids at your party entertained. It can be fairly inexpensive and they are often delivered and picked up on the same day. Keeping in mind that managing the kids at the party helps make the adults be able to relax and have a good time.

DIY Decorations

According to HGTV, creating your own birthday decorations is easy – and there are a lot of different themes to choose from. Especially when you are trying to keep the party affordable, it can be advantageous to do some things on your own as opposed to buying everything from a party supply store. It doesn’t matter what theme you choose – it can be princesses, cowboys, or something else – there are plenty of innovative ways to decorate for a birthday party.

Prepare Food the Night Before

The last thing you want to do is be in the kitchen during the whole party, prepping food. Keep the food simple and let people nosh on chips and salsa and other items while you put the real food together. All of the food that you serve can be prepared the night before. This way, you can simply unwrap and place it out on the table. At the max, you should have to put a cookie sheet in the oven and come take it out when the timer goes off.

Keep the Kids Entertained

Using a bounce house can be a great way to keep the kids entertained – and they won’t be under foot. You can find an array of jumpers and bounce houses for kids of all ages. Some even have slides and obstacle courses, making it even easier to keep everyone entertained for a while. Best of all, you can rent these – which means a company will come to set it up and break it down for you.

Other ways to keep the kids entertained include having some different games around for people to play. Make sure you keep the age in mind so that there is always something for each kid to participate in. If you are going to have a “winner” at each game, be sure you have some kind of prize, too.

Skip the Cake

You don’t have to do a cake for the birthday party – cupcakes are all the rage. While they are a little more expensive per person, you can also choose to make them on your own. If you serve cupcakes instead of cake, it’s easier to serve and you don’t have to worry about people getting upset that they “got the smaller piece” or the one “without the flower on it.” Each cupcake is identical, so there are no hard feelings when cake is served.

Keep it Disposable

One of the hardest things about a birthday party is the cleanup. No one is going to think less of you if you don’t break out the fine china. Just as you consider a bounce house because someone else brings it and takes it away, you can do the same with the plates, the forks, the napkins and even the tablecloths. Simply buy paper (or plastic) everything and when the party is over, you can sweep everything into garbage bags and be done with the cleanup in minutes. Your dishwasher will thank you as well.

There are plenty of party planning ideas and if you don’t want to spend a lot of money, you don’t have to. You can bring the entertainment anywhere you want – your home, a park, or anywhere. You can easily have a bounce house delivered wherever and all the food can be carried in by cooler.

How to Improve Your Sleep Routine

A good night’s sleep has been linked to a healthier heart and metabolism, along with improved memory, but sometimes those forty winks can feel pretty hard to catch. If counting sheep just isn’t cutting it, here are some top tips for improving your sleep routine.

Create a restful bedroom environment

Wherever possible, tailor where you’re sleeping to your own specifications, or negotiate with your partner to find a compromise. Try out a range of cushions and pillows, not just to make your room look cosy, but to see which offer the type of support you need. Browse the bedding sets at K&CO and look for different summer and winter duvets, as your body needs to be just the right temperature to get a good night’s rest. Also, consider investing in blackout curtains if lighter evenings or bright street lights are keeping you awake.

Keep the bedroom just for sleeping

Once you’ve created this cozy bedroom arrangement, it can be tempting for your bed to start serving as everything from an office to a home cinema and dining table, but try to keep it just for snoozing. This creates a stronger association between being in bed and going to sleep, and means your brain will start preparing for slumber as soon as you get between the sheets.

Exercise during the day but relax during the evening

We all know how necessary physical activity is to a healthy lifestyle, but exercising in the morning or afternoon will also help you fall asleep more quickly and get better quality sleep. However, once it gets to the end of the day, try and find time to relax: read, have a warm bath and avoid drinking too much caffeine. Try to turn off anything with a backlit screen like TVs, computers and mobile phones half an hour before you go to bed, as artificial light can suppress sleep-promoting hormones.

Have a set routine

One of the most essential elements of a good bedtime routine is to make it just that: a routine. Getting up and going to bed at roughly the same time every day and having a regular set of night time rituals helps program your body clock, so you’ll get to sleep much more easily.

How You Can Help Prevent a Stroke

Also known as a "brain attack," a stroke is a condition that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted by a blood clot or a breakage in a blood vessel. Stroke can be a major, traumatic event, causing brain cells to die and brain damage to occur. Although having a stroke can be devastating, the good news is that approximately 80 percent of strokes can be prevented.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a major risk factor for stroke. Some doctors state that a helpful stroke prevention measure is knowing and monitoring their blood pressure and following a doctor's treatment plan to lower their blood pressure if it is high. Blood pressure is typically checked at each annual doctor's exam visit; however, health fairs and drugstores often feature free blood pressure checks that patients may take advantage of in between doctor visits.

Atrial fibrillation, also known as Afib, is also a major risk factor that can increase the possibility of having a stroke by 50 percent. This condition can cause blood to pool in the heart and form a clot. Visiting a doctor annually is important as doctors may check for conditions like Afib and prescribe treatment to minimize or eliminate the associated risks.

One of many reasons to quit smoking is the increased risk of having a stroke. Smoking doubles stroke risk by contributing to artery clogging and raising blood pressure. Doctors have also linked alcohol consumption to stroke risk. Healthcare professionals recommend limiting drinking to no more than two drinks each day, though it may be best to abstain from alcohol completely.

High cholesterol levels can also contribute to stroke by clogging arteries. It is important to monitor food consumption and not overindulge in unhealthy fatty foods that are high in cholesterol. Cholesterol levels should be checked during an annual health exam. If levels are found to be high, a doctor may prescribe exercise, dietary changes, and medication.

People who are diagnosed with diabetes may also have other conditions that increase the risk of stroke. Diet, exercise, and regular monitoring and cooperation with a healthcare professional are critical to controlling diabetes.

A doctor will also be able to offer guidelines for reducing the risk of stroke and other complications.  Circulatory problems should be addressed with a healthcare professional. Those who have been diagnosed with sickle cell or other forms of severe anemia may have a higher risk of developing stroke. These conditions should be closely managed and monitored by a doctor to help reduce the risk.

Transient Ischemic Attack, or TIA, is a condition that can last from a few minutes to an entire day and may resemble the symptoms of stroke. Up to 40 percent of people who experience Transient Ischemic Attack may later have a stroke. Recognizing the symptoms of TIA and receiving treatment may reduce stroke risk.

The key to reducing the risk of having a stroke is simply knowing the risk factors and managing any that may apply. Stroke risk factors can generally be identified during a regular doctor's visit, at which point a plan for reducing the risk should be discussed with a physician.

How to Keep Your Home Safe

Keeping your house safe requires vigilance. Even if you live in a relatively peaceful community, you can never be too complacent especially if you live with your family. You can never really be too careful when it comes to safety inside your own home.
Here are some practical tips to keep safe.

Secure Your Door
If the only lock on your door is the knob lock, you’re not doing it right. Knob locks are easy to unlock for trained lock pickers. For added security, make sure that you have deadbolt above the knob lock.  A throw bolt is a bolt that comes out of the door. Throw bolts are very hard to remove and thus very effective in securing doors.

Make Sure the Door Itself is Solid
Even if you use several locks, a weak door is still very easy to breach. Not only should the door be heavy-duty but you must also make sure that the frame can withstand a great amount of force. Remember how in the movies they just kick the doors open? Weak doors.  Solid wood, fiberglass and reinforced metal are all excellent materials for a solid heavy-duty door.

Get a Watchdog
Barks will often scare off a would-be intruder. If you feel that getting a dog is too much trouble, you can use an alarm system that use barking dog sounds.

Lights where there is Action
You can use motion sensors in and around your house. These motion sensors can trigger the lights to turn on any time it senses movement. Intruders will think carefully before entering your home if they think that you are aware of their presence and are prepared. Get them on the spotlight. Your neighbors will also be aware of a burglar’s presence if there’s light on where they are operating.

Security Cameras
You can use CCTV systems that record everything. The beauty of this is that you can even check what’s happening in and around your house even if you’re not there. Most systems will have a feature that lets you check your home via the internet.  These systems can be costly. Fake cameras can be used if you’re on a tight budget.

Get a Safe
Burglars are, of course, after your valuables. A safe will add another layer of protection for your valuables. You can choose from a variety of safes. Some are installed on the ground, some in the walls. There are also fire-proof safes.

Get a Security System
Home security systems will scare most intruders. If they see that you have a security system in place, they’ll think twice before targeting your home. Some security systems even dial 911 automatically in-case someone break in.

Don’t Give them a Place to Hide
Bushes and large trees are perfect for burglars to hide. If you have obstructions around your home, remove them. Study the locations where a burglar is most likely to enter and make sure that there are no obstructions to let them hide.
