Fresh-Smelling Carpet: "Wow" Your Guests This Holiday Season

Hosting guests during the holidays can be stressful. We all want our homes to look and feel pristine, for our guests to feel happy and cozy. We cook, filling the home with the smell of food, and clean, using the vacuum and Swiffer and surface cleaner to make everything shine. But what do you do about an old carpet with a funny smell? No matter how clean and shiny your home, there's something about that old carpet that doesn't sit right. We've compiled a few couple tips on how to wow your guests this holiday season with a fresh and clean smelling carpet.

First, try a baking soda spot clean. Since carpets seem to capture odors and hold onto them with an iron grip, it takes considerable effort to fully get rid of those odors. Baking soda is known for getting rid of odors, and it's completely non-toxic and safe to use in your carpet. Sprinkle the affected areas liberally with baking soda. For more considerable odors, use a broom to spread the baking soda around and work it into your carpet's fibers. Sprinkle additional baking soda on the carpet, then let it sit for at least one day, preferably two. Once the time has passed, sweep up the top layer of baking soda. (Do not vacuum the top layer, as that much baking soda could damage your vacuum). Once the top layer is removed, use a vacuum cleaner to get the rest of the baking soda out of the carpet's fibers. Smell the area to gauge improvement. If you can smell a difference, repeat the process. Since baking soda is safe to use on your carpet, you can repeat this process until the odor is gone.

The day of your holiday party, you might want to employ this quick trick to give your home the holiday aroma. Mix together one cup of baking soda and one tablespoon of ground cinnamon. Add the combination to a shaker container and sprinkle liberally on your carpets. Let the solution stand for up to 60 minutes before vacuuming. Your home will smell like fresh cinnamon! These are two tricks to combat carpet odor, but remember, maintaining your carpets keeps them from developing odors to begin with. When it comes to keeping carpets smelling fresh, nothing beats a professional steam carpet cleaning a couple times a year. If you live anywhere near in Kennebunk, Maine check out carpetcleaningkennebunk.com for some awesome deals. The water penetrates the carpet's fibers, loosening any soil, oil, grease, and other odor-causing irritants.
