How to Comfort a Child's Emotions of Leaving Home

It inevitably happens.  Children grow up and eventually leave the nest they call home to spread their wings and venture off into adulthood.  This can be a difficult time emotionally for both parents and children.  One way we can help comfort our children is by examining the parent child relationship and through the exploration of emotions.

Michael C. Kinsey, Ph.D. is a psychologist who specializes in mental health and specifically parent-child attachments.  He has crafted an amazing book titled Dreams of Zugunruhe that confronts the emotions surrounding a child leaving home in a way that both comforts and reassures children as they head off into this new journey.

Dreams of Zugunruhe tells the story of a young Artic Tern, a bird who is known for it's journey that is longer than any other creatures, traveling a distance of thousands of miles per year.  This beautifully illustrated book tells the tale of a mother Tern using support and encouragement as her young Tern prepares to start it's voyage out into the unknown.

What makes this book so special is that reading together with your child creates a bonding moment that opens up the conversation to tackle emotions both you and your child are experiencing.  The young Tern in the story confesses his fears to go off on his own and conveys the reality of what many young adults feel themselves.  The story is powerful as the mother Tern uses reassurance and confidence building affirmations to help ease her young into this new transition.
